【课程简介】教学语言为英文,全程分为4个部分。欢迎有工程管理基础和英语基础的研究生和高年级本科生参加选课。课程内容如下:

The course will explore the nature and importance of the construction industry and the need for its development. It will consider the factors which influence the performance of the industry, and how these factors and their consequences can be addressed and taken positive advantage of. The course will discuss initiatives which have been taken to develop construction industries in countries at various stages of development will be discussed. Finally, the course will investigate the relationship between industry development and corporate strategisation and competitiveness by reviewing some of the business policies and practices of some international construction firms, and considering the relationship between these with the features of the construction industries of their home countries.

The general approach on the course will be to cover the international situation, and to encourage the participants to relate what is covered to corresponding policies, programmes, institutions and corporate practices inChina.

Course Outline

The course will comprise four sessions. The outline is shown below.

Session One

Construction Industry Development–what it means, what it involves, how its effectiveness can be measured, current issues of industry development, problems, necessary future action

Session Two

a.Construction Industry Development in Various Countries–initiatives that have been formulated and are being implemented

i.Developing countries–India, Malaysia, Singapore, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Tanzania

ii.Industrialised nations–Australia, Holland, the United Kingdom, Sweden

b.Revaluing Construction–why it is necessary, what it involves, what has been done, challenges

Session Three

a.Construction Industry in Industrialised Countries–processes on typical project, influence on competitiveness of firms–Australia, Austria, France, Italy, Germany, Japan, Sweden, United Kingdom, United States

b.Construction in Developing Countries

Session Four

Industry Development, Corporate Strategies and Corporate Competitiveness–the relationship between business policies and practices of some international construction firms, and the features of the construction industries of their home countries

Structure of Course and Teaching Approach

The course will comprise four sessions. Each session will be 4 hours long. Each session will be broken into two. In each half of a session, the lecture will last for 1.5 hours. This will be followed by a 0.5 hour discussion.

The course will be delivered in the form of interactive seminars. The 0.5 hours of discussions after the lecture in each of the sessions will consider questions which participants would have been given after the previous session. These questions will make up an assignment on the issues covered during the session. The assignments will require participants to prepare answers to the questions in outline form only.
